A Prayer a Day

When I was young I sat in the front row
in all my classes, wanting not to miss
a word the teacher spoke, listening attentively.
I still choose front rows, as often as I can,
at any event I go to, wanting genuinely
to connect and absorb
the reality of the moment.
Person to Person!…You can't top it!
Now I fear so many of us are missing
person to person ...real connection,
because we are not looking, not really listening,
not truly making contact with each other.
So busy, so busy with gadgets in our hands,
heads down, thumbs madly moving almost riotously,
wearing headsets, off in our own isolated zones.
Communication has become abstract and virtual.
Though magically inventive, forward moving,
progressive and genius in many ways,
the virtual when overused, distances us from our natural selves.
The addiction is to be challenged, don't you think!
Give me eyes looking into eyes,
bodies sharing up close and personal
in good vibrations, smiling and spontaneous.
Simply being with each other without a device in-between.
How about a moment of remembering
we are flesh and blood, not just minds and thumbs.
Let's get back to openhearted… in the now… being-ness.
Put down your gadgets (for a heart's beat) and hug someone.
